Hello all, it's been a few months since we've talked - I've really missed you, but I've realized that I have to say good-bye. Since my last post in June 2012 I had a beautiful baby, started graduate school, and I will soon return to my demanding job so unfortunately I can't continue with Classical Music in Edmonton.
I started this blog because I wanted to find a way to be part of a musical community after moving to Edmonton from Ontario, and to find a new musical outlet since performance anxiety has taken all the fun out of performing.
I've had a fantastic time meeting amazing people and hopefully promoting the great music happening in Edmonton. We need to celebrate all the wonderful music being made here and the dedicated people who make it happen.
I hope that someone out there will continue to provide a place where Edmontonians can go to find out all that's happening in our classical music community. I am constantly amazed at the growth and the calibre of music making here, and my hope for the future is to ensure that our new and emerging artists have the opportunity to perform.

Artists get "catalytic" boost on the road to success
Edmonton... Eight Alberta artists received the 2012 Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award June 14, 2012 in a ceremony hosted by His Honour Col. (Ret’d) the Honourable Donald S. Ethell and Her Honour Linda Ethell.
“These artists represent the best of a community that challenges, enlightens and entertains us,” said Lieutenant Governor Ethell. “Creativity of this magnitude is infectious.”
The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Awards is among Canada’s most generous arts awards programs. Each recipient receives a medal and $10,000.
Susan Green, Chair of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards, says, “Ten thousand dollars to an emerging artist is a catalyst for great things.”
“We’ve seen careers blossom in previous recipients and we know today’s awards will strengthen these artists and Alberta’s performing, literary and visual arts culture in the process.”
About the awards
The Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Awards Foundation was established in 2003 to celebrate excellence in the arts and to underline the importance of the arts in Alberta.
The Emerging Artist Awards, offered in alternate years, gives up to 10 awards of $10,000 each to support and encourage promising artists early in their careers, who have created a modest body of work, and are recognized by established artists in the same field of endeavour as having potential to achieve excellence in their discipline. Recipients also receive a medal designed by Wei Yew. The 2012 adjudication panel included Charlie Austin, Denise Clarke and Nancy (Tousley) Cameron.

Emma Parkinson, mezzo-soprano, Lethbridge
According to adjudicators, “She rose to the top of the ‘ear’ chart with the quality of her exquisite voice.” Mezzo-soprano Emma Parkinson calls Lethbridge home, but her voice belongs to the world. She made her solo debut as Siebel in Faust with Opera de Montreal this spring and will debut in Europe as Mercedes this summer in a new production of Carmen with Seefestspiele Berlin. Winter will see her back at Opera de Montreal playing Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus.
Parkinson completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Lethbridge and master’s degree at McGill University. In 2010, she was selected as a young artist in the Atelier Lyrique of the Opera de Montreal, a training program designed to develop professional singers, and is in her final season with this program. Parkinson says the award money will support ongoing training and an audition tour, including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions in November 2012.

Pro Coro Canada Announces New Members for 2012-2013
Pro Coro Canada announces core membership for the 2012–2013 season
After several days of auditions with 50 singers participating, Pro Coro is happy to announce the voices that will make up Pro Coro Canada in 2012–2013.
The individual and ensemble auditions with new Artistic Director Michael Zaugg proved to be a great starting point for the creation of an outstanding and virtuoso ensemble.
Thank you all the choristers who invested their time and effort in preparing for the audition process.

Winner of the Shean Piano Competition 2012
On Friday, May 18, 2012 – after two days of amazing and very high calibre competition – pianist Adam Żukiewicz (28 years old), originally from Jawor, Poland and currently studying in Toronto, was awarded the $8,000 top prize in The Shean Piano Competition. He has also won the opportunity to play with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at a future date. Mr. Żukiewicz was one of 6 finalists chosen from the 23 submitted entries to compete in the 2012 Shean Piano Competition on May 17 and 18.
The complete results of the Competition were as follows:
First Place and $8,000 – Adam Żukiewicz (Jawor, Poland)
Second Place and $5,000 – Lisa Tahara (Vancouver, BC)
Third Place and $4,000 – Steven Massicotte (Montréal, QC)
Fourth Place and $3,000 – Michelle Powell (Grande Prairie, AB)
(Tie) Fifth Place and $2,000 each – Benjamin Chapman (Sydney, NSW, Australia) and Rich Coburn (Nelson, BC)
Lisa Tahara also won $1,000 Paul J. Bourret Prize for Best Performance of the Test Piece – Valse, Op. 38 by Alexander Scriabin.
The adjudicators for this year’s Competition were David Hoyt, Chair; Jane Coop and William Wolfram.

The auditions will be organized into fifteen-minute slots. Actors are asked to prepare two contrasting musical theatre songs as well as a short comedic monologue. We ask that your songs be cut versions but be prepared to perform them in their entirety if requested. An accompanist will be provided. Please provide a headshot and resume.
PIANISTS
Interviews will be scheduled throughout the day. Please bring a short musical theatre piece to perform. You may also be asked to sight-read.

Jeff Unger has composed more than a dozen new musicals for Alberta Opera and this project marks his fifth collaboration with Farren Timoteo. Their previous works have toured the province extensively and garnered numerous acknowledgements from the Elizabeth Sterling Haynes Awards. Sleeping Beauty will make its world debut on October 26th, 2012 at the Westbury Theatre and will then embark on a vast tour of Alberta, which will conclude in June.

Auditions for Da Camera Singers June 4-5, 2012
Auditions for the Da Camera Singers will be held on Monday June 4 and Tuesday June 5, 2012 between 5:45pm and 9:30pm at Holy Trinity Anglican Church (10037 84 Av).
The audition will be approximately ten minutes in length. New auditions will be required to sing one song of their choice (accompanist provided - please bring a copy of the music), perform a range test and musicianship (sightreading) tests. You will also be required to sing your voice part of "Locus Iste" by Bruckner.

The Professional Arts Coalition of Edmonton is organizing an Arts Forum for this Friday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jefferson Room at the Prince of Wales Armouries, 10440 – 108 Avenue.
Bring your arts, culture and heritage questions with notebooks and pencils to the Prince of Wales Armouries this Friday. Tell all your professional artist and arts supporters friends to come, too. Let’s impress upon all these candidates how important arts, culture and heritage is to all Albertans.

Want to know where the different parties stand on arts and culture issues in the province of Alberta? PACE recently sent the following information and questions to the leaders of every party running candidates in the current election.
PACE is starting to receive responses to the “ask” it sent to all political leaders running in the 2012 Alberta provincial election.
